Reaching for Grossglockner

Today we finally had a (small) high pressure system coming in, so we thought it was about time to try and climb and board the Grossglockner. The Grossglockner is Austria’s highest mountain at 3798m. We left yesterday to go and spend the night at the winterraum of the Stüdlhütte. A nice cozy little hut (at least the winterraum is).

This morning we got up at 3:00 am and started hiking up in the mist. So far for the weatherforecast! As soon as it got light the mist started to disappear and we found ourselves at the bottom of the glacier leading up to the Grossglockner.

The route up to the top has a lot of different sections: snowfields, glaciers, ridges and rock. After a couple of hours and some hard work, we got to the top of the Kleinglockner. There we had to make a tough choice. Temperature was rising and we had to turn around to make it down safely. So no top of the Grossglockner, although it was ‘that’ close.

The riding down was perfect, steeps, couloirs, big open glacier and slushy at the bottom. Not bad for the 8th of may!
